Genetic engineering poses many advantages for humans as well as disadvantages. Some of these advantages may include things like gene therapy, creation of new pharmaceuticals, and a potential for extending life span. Disadvantages with this engineering have …show more content…
“These continuing breakthroughs have allowed science to more deeply understand DNA and its role in medicine..” (allaboutpopularissues.org). Scientists research on genetic engineering and gene therapy has dramatically increased their knowledge about new medicines and drugs. This is a huge benefit for humans because it has allowed for new diseases and illnesses to be cured and fought based on the knowledge learned from genetic engineering research and results.
Also genetic engineering has been said to have the potential to slow down the rate of aging, resulting in a longer life-span. “According to the studies of scientists, genetic engineering can increase the life span between one-hundred to one-hundred fifty years” (occupytheory.org). Of course this hasn 't been scientifically a proven well enough to make it a strong benefit when arguing about genetic …show more content…
“As defective genes are replaced with functional gene, then it is expected that genetic diversity will now be a thing of the past” (occupytherapy.org). This will overall reduce the number of various genes making the whole human race at risk of disease or sickness. Loss of genetic diversity could result in a mass extinction of the whole human population.
Is genetic engineering right? Is it wrong? Some people may never know. Everyone’s viewpoint on this subject will always be different due to the moral and ethical concerns that follow. No one can specifically judge whether or not genetic engineering overall is morally right. All of the benefits are very great and positive aspects for human life but the disadvantages pose more concern and greater risks. If this is the future for our world like scientists say, they need to come up with ways to make the advantages greater than the disadvantages so that it doesn 't result poorly for everyone experimenting with
