Organisms that are genetically modified to improve or change another organism are called genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Some scientists also refer to this as the transgenic process or the transfer of genes. Even though this may seem like new technology, scientists have been using this process during the development of insulin for generations. There are many different ways to modify genes to produce the desired traits. One of the more traditional ways of producing a desired trait is to conduct selective breeding, through both plants and animals. Today, scientists have developed ways to physically add a desired trait to a new plant to improve a certain trait in that particular plant. This transgenic process if often performed on plants to allow the plant to become herbicide or pesticide …show more content…
Government agencies. The three agencies are the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Each one of these organizations has different areas they govern when it comes to regulating what Americans consume. The USDA governs environmental concerns such as field testing, to make sure no plants traits are being spread to non-target areas. The EPA regulates the distribution, use, and testing of plants that produce pesticide like substances. The FDA ensures that foods are safe and govern using the bylaws of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. These three agencies work to ensure that there are regulations set forth to control the production and distribution of all genetically modified plants and
