However, with the help of Alexander Hamilton, Washington re-wrote the address to what it is known as today. In the address, Washington explained what he thought would be best for the developing country in a few different matters, but particularly about foreign affairs. What his policy was that the United States should be friendly and trade with all the different countries, with a primary focus on Europe. He suggested that, “a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for a favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interests exists.” What Washington is trying to explain through this is that there is no point for the United States to become involved in European wars and general affairs because it does not immediately affect them. This reduces the chances of the United States being called to fight for a country when they have very little to offer, with no navy and a minimal militia. However, because the United States would still be friendly with other countries, they would have time to grow and develop both the unstable economy and work on strengthening the military resources. As time progressed, interest in the French and British conflict developed among the Americans. Many believed that it was the right thing to aid the French since they had helped defeated the British during the Revolutionary War. There were also others who believed that giving support to the British would benefit America more efficiently. If the United States would be able to gain the alliance of Britain, it would be incredibly beneficial to the American economy. Still, there were others who believed that it is best to stay within the continent and keep a policy of isolation. While this is occurring, George Washington passed away in December 1799. His death caused a nationwide state of mourning. Mock funerals were held and eulogies and other pieces were written in his honor. This state of mourning lasted for months and the country was on a temporary pause. While in this state, Thomas Jefferson was elected the third president of the United States. During his Inaugural Address, Jefferson alluded to Washington’s Farewell address, however changing the wording slightly to change the meaning. What Jefferson ends up changing is a vital error that creates a new concept of George Washington’s international policy philosophy. In the adaption, Jefferson states that it is better to not get involved in any foreign affairs at all and that it is better to be a completely isolated country.
