As a 17-year-old high school senior, I had to make my first adult-like decision. While in high school, I struggled with deciding where I would attend undergraduate university. I contemplated many things when decided which university I would attend. The choices I had to make included wanting to attend the same university as my friends or attend a local university. When considering the reputation of the university, is it better to attend a school on its social reputation or academic reputation.

My mentor Noreen Clancy who works at RAND Corporation as an Environmental Scientist was also another constant source of help. She planned college tours, registered for SAT prep classes, attended workshops, edited personal statements even spoke with college recruiters on my behalf. The help, hard work and dedication provided by these two individuals are priceless.
Two of the consistent emotions I felt during this process of deciding whether or not to attend university and if so where; were gratitude and comfort. I felt both my school counselor and mentor wanted to genuinely help me with this life choice. The help that was offered did not seem forced or mundane. I felt that they both genuinely cared about my life at this particular point and they wanted what was best for me. The help that was presented was a humbling experience. Naturally, we as people tend to think that in order for someone to do something for us, they must stand to benefit in the end. Students from inner cities achieve less in school, attain less education, and encounter less success in the labor market later in life. Researchers and educators often link this perceived performance of inner city youth to home and school environments that do not foster educational and economic success. As a social worker, I understand the importance of having guidance and support especially while in high school. The guidance provided throughout high school can shape the career and life path of any individuals. As a social worker, I want to remain genuine and authentic in all I that I do. People are able to detect when an individual is being not only sincere and but genuine and likewise are able to able note when an individual is not being genuine. As a social worker, I believe it is my job to help others realize the potential they possess while aiding them during their road to recovery, self-awareness and ultimately a life of higher
