The Global opportunity of business has companies in the forefront, vying to get the potential lead on an international level. Culture is defined as the sum total of beliefs, rules, techniques, institutions, and artifacts that characterize human populations. In China business culture is considered unique with the environment in China being structured through its government and its controls over the economic system. This structure can shape the behavior of a people and from this myths can be formulated concerning certain countries that become ethnocentrism and centered on myths (Kreitner, Kinicki, 2013). After reviewing the case study on China Myths, China Facts, I have concluded that the presentation has not challenged my assumption about China or the Chinese people.
Understanding a country’s culture and its differences are essential to understanding the behavior of the people within the country and its culture. My initial view of the Chinese people was based on the collectivist control the government has on the people, that focus on the group more that the individual. This coincides with a truth that decisions are often made in groups and the philosophy is that people act in the interest of the group and not necessarily of themselves (Kreitner, Kinicki, 2013). After researching Geert Hofstede Culture dimensions and reviewing the dimensions I was able to gain a better understanding about the
Chinese culture.

Managers would also have to deal with the ideal of Americans that people should strive to be the best they can be and that the winner takes all attitude. North America is a low – context culture, so managers would avoid any misunderstandings or miscommunications to avoid problems and issues. Adjustments have to be made by Chinese managers and American workers in an attempt to create synergy together and focus on the ultimate goal for the business.
Based on what I learned in this chapter, I’m not sure if I would be willing to accept a foreign assignment at this point in my life. I believe that learning a new culture would be enriching and invigorating, but it would also be challenging and the notion of being homesick or adapting to the culture would be a challenge for me.
Conclusion Embracing the customs and culture is to embrace a country. I have discovered that China is a nation that is full of culture, tradition and etiquettes. These customs are a major impact in the business aspects on the Chinese. It is key that someone who seeks to venture into business in
China will have their work cut-out for them through research. In China relationships
