Climate Change
Climate change, the distribution of weather patterns that lasts for three decades ("Glossary of…” 1), is a major problem that is affecting the world today. It is important that we know that climate affects a lot of our economy and the way we live. Recent events such as the flooding of Pakistan and hurricane Katrina can show us just how much weather - the conditions of the atmosphere over a short period of time - and climate can affect our lives. Thanks to the industrial revolution and consumption of fossil fuels by us, the amount of greenhouse gases emitted in to the atmosphere have increased dangerously in recent years.
Many factors have contributed to cause the climate …show more content…
However, the amount of trapped gases in the atmosphere has increased the average temperature by about 1.3 degrees worldwide in the last hundred years (“Global warming” 1). We are the main cause of this alteration. Between a gap of ten years, from 2000 to 2010, an extra seven billion metric tons of fossil fuels were released into the atmosphere. In the past two hundred years, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has spiraled up by more than thirty percent (“Global warming” 2).
This has caused the extinction of animals, spreading of diseases, and conflicts within the sea. In 1999, the death of the last Golden Toad in Central America was marked to be the first documented species that were compelled toward extinction by climate change ("Wildlife at Risk...”1). In addition to climate change, global warming have affected the animal’s distribution and behavior. There are birds that are migrating earlier than they used to, and in some countries they don’t …show more content…
One way is to “go green”. Start using reusable aluminum bottles to drink water in instead of purchasing expensive plastic water bottles. This will keep the environment cleaner, considering that 75 percent of the empty plastic bottles end up in our landfills, lakes, streams and oceans, where they may never fully decompose (“Bottled Water…” 1). Plant trees, as it will clean the air and sequester the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. If one’s work place is close, then take a bicycle or walk instead of driving, and if one works far away, then buy a hybrid or use an alternative fuel such as biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel is really good as it uses fuel made from everyday renewable resources, like vegetable oils or animal fats. Given that electricity production generates more than 1.9 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year, buying eco-bulbs is a good idea (“10 Ways…”1). Also, increasing our national recycling rate from its current level would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 10 million metric tons of carbon equivalent (MMTCE). In doing so, we will cut the emissions by more than 21.4 MMTCE which is roughly the consumption of electricity in 11 million households (“Source Reduction…” 1). If all humans implement this into their life styles, there is no doubt that it will keep the global temperature from
