“Globalization” is a theory that works best to describe our modern society. It focuses on the idea that the todays world is full of interconnections between nations. At the core of globalization is a free market capitalism. Today we are in a state where networks of interdependence allow for an easy flow of trade, ideas, people, and more increasingly environmental impacts. Democracy and capitalism spread after the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. Although forms of Globalism have existed throughout history such as during “the age of imperialism,” the impact has never been as great as today. Starting in 1990’s in particular a surge in technologies have allowed for the speed of communication to increase dramatically. International trade drives this spread of globalism too. There are many benefits to this type of world system. First, it rewards efficient countries and punishes those who are not. No single state or world government determines where investments go, therefore money flows out of weak nations. In an ideal world, this encourages economies of scale, which creates an overall more efficient world market. Another benefit of globalization is the promotion of democracies and its ideas and people travel easily in countries that have freedoms. The increasingly globalized world explains many influences of the United States and Cuban relations. Immigration is another factor that is ignored in realist theory, as these people are non-state actors. The flow of people and ideas has caused this world to become more interconnected. During the late twentieth century there was a surge of Cuba migrants into the US. The US has a Cold War policy allowing Cubans who arrive on US soil to become political refugees. This effected the geopolitics, especially in areas like Florida. Many diplomatic issues developed between the United States and Cuba over immigration polices. At heighted times of tensions, such as custody battles, the embargo would tighten. Any migration of people to a new country will bring a flow of ideas. Americans have gained insight on the human rights violations that take place in Cuba by the word of those trying to escape. Today, as relations loosen the number of immigrants have surged dramatically. Approximately 2 million Cuban Americans live in the US today, the size of this population has given influence on politics. In the past many Cuban Americans supported the embargo. However, a survey conducted by Florida University of Cuban Americans in Miami-Dade County in 2014 shows 52% oppose continuing the embargo, while 13% opposed the embargo in 1991.
