The Grand Canyon Boulders Taller than the Great Tower of Seville by Garcia Lopez de Cardenas and The Most Sublime Spectacle on Earth by John Wesley Powell are two stories with different opinions of The Grand Canyon. The first story shows how The Grand Canyon can be very annoying and not worth of seeing. The second story shows how The Grand Canyon can be very fascinating; therefore the author has trouble explaining his whole trip. Boulders Taller than the Great Tower of Seville by de Cardenas was a very difficult journey that took away their time.…
Imagine a place where everywhere you look, you see beauty, everywhere you smell is crisp fresh air. Everywhere surrounding you are ginormous mountains with snow slowly melting and one huge blue body of water. There are trees all over the place, and everywhere you look you see nature and all of God’s creations. This fascinating place is Lake Tahoe, in Nevada. Lake Tahoe is absolutely one of the most gorgeous places I have ever been.…
I grew up in the cold state of California. The city of Oxnard was my home for about 9 years before moving to Surprise Arizona. My life has changed rapidly when I loved to the City of Surprise. When my family moved here, many buildings had yet to be built, and Surprise’s neighborhoods still expanding. The house we lived in now still remains our first house in Arizona.…
As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…
As teenagers growing up in Powder Springs, Georgia during the 1980’s, it was somewhat challenging at times to find safe and entertaining ways to occupy our time. Even though we did not have free reign to do as we chose, I would not categorize my parents as extremely strict. Relying on our parents, as if they were our personal taxi service, my sister and I struggled to find activities relatively close to home. After discovering we really enjoyed skating, we spent countless Friday and Saturday nights at the Sparkles Skating Rink in Paulding County. The indoor facility was a safe environment for teenagers, which provided my parents with a certain level of comfort to allow us to gather with friends.…
Throughout the course of my short seventeen years, I have grown and learned many things. I grew up in a small rural town called Elk Creek. There are no strangers in Elk Creek; people sleep with their doors unlocked and their windows open. Everyone who has grown up in a small town can agree that friendship and community become a second nature trait. Although I have copious amounts of love and respect for where I grew up; I believe that I do not belong there.…
Imagine rushing around, excited and overjoyed at every turn. Looking up and seeing smiles and laughs from your family as they watch on. Squealing around every curve with the rush of excitement that you feel within. The warmth of a summer day in the Rocky Mountains, the slight breeze blowing in your face, the feeling of pure bliss, knowing that this moment in time is one you want to remember, a true staple of your loving relationship with your family. Imagine the look of excitement on the face of your loved ones as you bask in the moment.…
History: A. There have been traces of people in Bryce Canyon dating back 10,000 years. At the time no preserving was needed because no harm was being done to the area. But, in the 1920’s Stephen Mather felt the need to preserve the park do to overgrazing, logging, and unregulated visitation.…
Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation……
I saw only darkness, save the faint glow of lava rocks in a small hole dug in front of me. I breathe in what should be steaming hot air, but it is dry, yet so hot. Even growing up in Tucson where the summer heat can reach 110 degrees, I’ve never experienced something quite like this. I wished I was playing out in that summer heat, this felt like I was being cooked in an oven. I breathe in again, more dry air.…
I've lived in the Rio Grande Valley my whole life. Ever since I could remember, I had never been outside these valley roads. I had always dreamed about what a vacation would be like. I ustheir ed to have friends all the time tell me about their trips to San Antonio, Houston, and Florida , just to name a few. I came from a lower class family of five so a vacation was never an option for us.…
My mom gently shakes me to wake me from my slumber. Today's the day. We leave for Iowa in half an hour. My room was dark with a sense of gloominess. Mentally preparing myself for six hours of boredom, then three days of fun, I stretched my tired muscles out.…
You always hear about great legends, no matter where you are from. All my life I had heard about a great monsters who used to roam The Great Plains in Texas, but none of the stories matched the monster I had found. I lived in a small quaint house right outside of a town in the middle of the Texas Plains. Most of the townsfolk were superstitious. My mother was a carefree and spirited woman who let me roam the flat land, not troubled by the hideous monster myths.…
