Being Banned Harper Lee is the author of To Kill a Mockingbird. Her full name is Nelle Harper Lee. She is the youngest daughter of Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunnigham Finch Lee. Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama on April 28, 1926. She has total of 2 sisters and 1 brother. Although her brother died of a sudden cerebral hemorrhage in 1951. She grew up in Florida but eventually made it back to Monroeville County in the 1900s. Harper Lee was never married. To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960. He acts as a “mockingbird” an important symbol of innocence destroyed by evil. He is a black man accused of rape of a young white girl. Atticus, the lawyer of Maycomb, decides to defend Tom during his trial. Bob Ewell is the man accusing Tom of rape over his daughter, Mayella Ewell. The Ewells know that they are by far the lowest of the low amongst the white people in Maycomb. Mayellas’ mother died when she was young and her father Bob makes her a surrogate wife for himself and mother figure to her siblings. It was also banned in Eden Valley, Minnesota in 1977. In the 1980s the novel was labeled as “filthy, trashy novel.” After unsuccessfully trying to ban Lee’s novel, three black parents resigned from the townships human relations advisory council. In Kansas City and Park Hill, Missouri junior high schools challenged the book because of its profanity and racial slurs. In Waukegan, Illinois School District challenged the book in 1984 because of the word “nigger”. At different times of year the book has been challenged over and over again; for same various reasons. It’s just a matter of time before another school or parent has an issue about what the book contains. Despite of the meaning behind it, they are more interested of what the contents it hold and what the usage of the words
