Harper is actually the middle name of Nelle Harper Lee, the woman who wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. Her life long friendship with another Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist is just incredible. Her friend, Truman Capote, and she used to write short stories on a typewriter Lee’s father gave to her.
She, tougher than most of the boys, often stepped up as Truman's protector. Truman was picked on because he liked very few things the other boys his age were interested in. He was also picked on for the fancy clothes he wore and how sensitive he was. The friends had very different lives; Truman lived with his mother’s relatives after his parents abandoned him.
