Tom Joad has experienced the prison lifestyle after killing a drunken man with a shovel. His short temper and past sins follow him as he leads the Joads to California. Throughout the trip, Tom is forced to restrain from violence and conflict in order to prevent breaking his parole. While the Joads are traveling, they are stopped by an angry mob who verbally harass and threaten them. “‘Well, goddamn it, you’re going’ the wrong way. We ain’t gonna have no goddamn Okies in this town’” (279). Tom’s calm and appropriate response symbolizes grace under pressure. This experience marks the beginning of Tom maturing into manhood.
