Minerva did a great job of doing that throughout the book. When Minerva listened to Sinita’s story she was very scared but she learned to control her emotions, just like a hero would. “I started crying, but I pinched my arms to stop. I had to be brave for Sinita ( Alvarez 32). This is an exemplary instance of selflessness, Minerva is overriding her natural reactions for the benefit of another person. There is another example when Minerva was surprised by her sister’s tone and told her what she wanted to know which is a positive thing and took a lot of courage because she had to have a lot of confidence to let her sister in on the secret. “She seemed pretty impressed with my arguing back at her like that. She’s always telling me to stand up for myself, but I guess she didn 't figure I 'd stand up to her” (pg. 42) . This is a huge act of courage and shows just how dedicated Minerva is. Minerva had the courage to refuse a dictator what he wants which takes an incredible amount of bravery. Ex: She tells her sister, He yanks me by the wrist, thrusting his pelvis at me in a vulgar way, and I can see my hand in an endless slow motion rise—a mind all its own—and come down on the astonished, made-up face.” (pg. 82). Minerva pushes away Trujillo when he tries to get with her and if refusing a barbaric dictator something he wants isn’t brave, I don’t know what is. One amazing thing that Minerva has done is joined the rebellious crew trying to take down the dictatorship which is incredibly brave. “I joined the rebellion because it needed to be done.” (pg. 54). Minerva was also able to survive prison under a dictatorship which is extremely heroic. All of these showcase how heroic Minerva
