Case background
A 26-year old white lady who has the symptoms includes genital itchy and sharp and severe pain on labia. She also has three previous episodes of pain over 6 months. It appearance of red sores, crusted and healed without scar and small red blisters. Beside, she has 5 sexual partners since last year. The doctor makes diagnosis of Genital herpes simplex.
Etiology of herpes simplex virus type 2(HSV-2)
The disease causes by herpes simplex virus. It divides into type 1 and type 2. In the case, it should be type 2 (HSV-2) since it is genital infection. The virion is spherical and it involves 35 proteins in the structure of virion. HSV-2 is the member of the Herpesviridae family. For the structure, it includes the envelope with lipid bilayer membrane which contains viral glycoprotein spikes. It also derived from nuclear membrane of infected cell. So, the disease classify as a sexually transmitted disease. The partner contact body fluid during sex from infected individual such as kiss with open sores or lesions.
Clinical features
The infected area such as genital or anal area occur the sensation of burning or tingling. The group of small blisters in pinpointed size appeared and enlarge to green bean size. The blisters usually rupture in 3-4 days and become genital ulcers. Beside, another symptom may occur such as fever, body aches and swollen lymph nodes. According to the case, she only has the small red blisters localized in the labia.
Incubation period
The incubation period for primary HSV-2 infection range from is 2-20 days, with an average of around 6 days (Evans A.S. 2013). The symptom may never visible in some people when they are infected. Therefore, it is difficult to define the incubation period.
