How Can Probiotics Reduce High Triglycerides?
A 2015 study published in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases, found that study participants who took probiotic supplements were able to decrease their triglyceride levels. The double-blind study had 92 participants who all had high triglyceride levels. Over the 12 weeks study, participants were given either a placebo or a supplement that contained the probiotics Lactobacillus curvatus and Lactobacillus plantarum.
After 12 weeks, the triglyceride levels of the patients were measured. Those who had taken the probiotics experienced a 20 percent reduction in their triglyceride levels and a 25 percent increase in their apolipoprotein A-V levels, a protein that helps regulate triglyceride in the body.
Researchers believe that probiotics may change how the body processes the fat and sugar in the food that is eaten, helping it to use it more efficiently as energy and decreasing the levels that remain in the
