On Friday, July 10th, the local instrumental jazz group Yuma Jazz Company played at Lutes Casino for a couple of hours. The instrumentation was fairly standard for a jazz group, with trumpet, saxophone, guitar, double bass, and drums (I believe those were electric). The guitar and bass, along with the drums, served as a sort of basso continuo, generally backing the horns, but occasionally taking up the melody for themselves, resulting in a texture that was thinly polyphonic. Also noticeable was the “fabulous light up tip jar,” a colorful accompaniment to their music. The concert ran from 7 to 9 PM, so I went in not only with the intention of listening to the group but also with a good meal in mind.…
Whether you're a fan of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, or you're just a rock fan in general, you'll want to add this CD to your collection. At the time of the band's CSNY 1974 tour, they brought in the highest amount ever for a tour. The tour grossed more than 11 million dollars, which at the time was unheard of. Issues within the group were well know, however, the band members still managed to make wonderful music together. Sit back and enjoy listening to hits such as ' Love the One You're With, Our House, and Teach Your Children', as well as many other songs.…
I choose to free write a concert to follow the life of Mariam. Mariam would be best represented by a piano keyboard, since among the piano instruments the keyboard is a misfit and a lower class instrument compared to the piano and organ. A piano is a grand instrument used in concerts and the upper class, events such as weddings, performances and churches. The organ is the backbone of a church used in holy ceremonies and only churches can afford and maintain such an extravagant piano. Even the higher quality midi or digital computer music pianos are tuning out obsolete keyboard.…

Upon first entering the Caine Performance Hall, my tickets were quickly taken and I was ushered into a moderately sized room and asked to find a seat. The walls within the room were covered with elaborate panelling - no doubt to improve the acoustics. There were 4 sections of seats and since I was a little late I took a seat in the back, however, because of the small scale of the performance room, I didn’t feel as if I was far from the stage. When the performers came out, the whole production felt very intimate which helped me to really feel and attempt to understand the complex music. The average age of others attending the concert was between 35-60, there were only a few younger people in attendance.…

I observed the wind ensemble percussion section and was blown away by how organized they were in everything that they did. It was clear that they had the same type of training, because their strokes were so similar it was impressive. The percussion equipment was set up strategically, and every member of the ensemble knew exactly where to be at every moment during the music. The mallets were organized on stands, and it was interesting to notice the subtle change in tone when they switched mallets. Everything was intentional and I appreciated that.…

Concert Report Two The concert performance given live that I have attended on Thursday April 20th, 2017 was an organ licentiate recital by Ian Guenette. It was held at the Redpath Hall, a building located on McTavish street. The Redpath Hall was first dedicated for a library building, but is now taken charge by the Schulich School of Music. The Hall is very charming with its high selling that contains thick dark brown carved wodden beams that covers the intire ceiling and gives warmth to the room.…

The next set was performed by an all-female punk band formed in 2014, Cayetana, which is rather unique for the genre. Lastly, the headline band performed: a band named PUP, created in 2013 and also from Canada. The entirety of the show emitted a sense of community, openness, diversity, and inclusion.…
My experience presenting choreography and performing in the 2017 Xperimental Dance Concert was challenging, yet stimulating. I believe choreographing for any type of venue is an intimate and vulnerable task, and this venue enabled the audience to witness every aspect of the pieces in the concert from many diverse angles; which caused many choreographers, including me, to feel a little anxious about presenting our works. Although I felt apprehensive about the intimate space, I recognized that this concert was unlike any I had performed in previously because the space was not in a normal proscenium set up, and I believe I let that idea influence my experience. For example, I was able to interpret my piece in a unique way because I thought about…
