The Army Ethic defines what it means to serve honorably. Our professional responsibility is to daily contribute honorable service, living by and upholding the Army Ethic in the conduct of our mission, performance of duty, and all aspects of life.
Each essential characteristic is linked to honorable service by virtue of upholding the Army Ethics. While honorable service is vital to the success of all essential characteristics in order to exercise the Army Profession, other notable characteristics may be as significant. Honorable service is a key characteristic of the Army Profession however, it is not the foundation upon which the essential characteristics were built. Others may suggest trust as the key element. The American people place their trust in us as an Army Profession to defend the Nation. We are entrust with this responsibility, General Martin E. Dempsey, 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff stated:
