There was also up sides to amputation,which would be that it helped the patient from dying. Another technique used was Bloodletting otherwise known as bleeding. Many people believed that getting rid of blood would get rid of the illness. The thing was that they let out too much blood, this led to many deaths. Including George Washington and Charles II. In the 1800’s they also used a technique called Trepanation. Trepanation was used to get rid of headaches and built up stress. Doctors used the technique of Trepanation to get rid of stress by hammering holes in the patient 's head. Most of the people believe that if they hammered holes in their head all the evil spirits would leave. After anesthesia was invented patients feeling changed dramatically about having surgery. The patient 's feeling towards the doctors changed to. Now the patients could trust the doctors because they did not have to worry about the pain the surgery would cause. They could also trust the doctors more because the patients felt like the doctors could focus more and just pay attention to that and not their screaming. When anesthesia was not invented yet the doctors could not focus as much because of the patients screaming. Most of the patients feelings changed toward surgery in general to. Now the patients felt comfortable with the idea of surgery after anesthesia was invented. A ton of people loved the idea of not feeling pain during surgery and were okay to have it if needed. Before anesthesia,for critical surgeries,many people decided not to do the surgery because of the pain,than when anesthesia was invented the patients wanted surgery in critical moments. In the years through 1894-1904,an average of 2,427 surgeries were done,at the Massachusetts General Hospital. When 1914 came around more than 4,000 surgeries were held.
