He explores instances of heroic, complex, and transformative architecture and how other scholars have failed in their analysis. He does a fairly good job defining the terms he uses for each section, but does little to connect the three, making it difficult to decipher a cohesive aim of the…
I work in a place which surely can be defined as a cultural object of the state of New York, Bellevue Hospital, the first public hospital in the US. It is located on First Avenue between 27th & 28th Street in Manhattan. Although, most people recognize Bellevue by its psychiatric service and/or because it is the one that serves the Ebola patients; the hospital offers an ample variety of medical specialties; it is a level one trauma center, a teaching hospital and a prison. Different factors calls my attention from this hospital, I would say Bellevue is the image of the New York city’s life in a variety of aspects, because in this environment one gets to be aware of the reality of this city, not just what the media offers. Let’s start…
Ever since the 80’s and 90’s, Chelsea has been the center of one of the greatest art cities in the world. Located on the West Side of Manhattan, this neighborhood also includes places of interest such as Hotel Chelsea, the Highline, Chelsea Market, the Hudson River Park and, most notably, the commercial art galleries. These galleries are what causes Chelsea to be such a vast part of New York’s art scene. This neighborhood’s history began in 1750, when a British Major, named Thomas Clarke, bought 90 acres of land and naming his land after the manor of Chelsea in London. Chelsea has had countless owners and has been utilized for numerous purposes.…

Over the years, the commercial activities dwindled, decreasing its economical growth. In the 1970’s,when investors wanted to redevelop the Ninth Square, they faced difficulties. It was a time when people were not moving into the cities, and many commercial buildings were becoming vacant, leaving the city with no attraction for businesses or consumers.…

Peter Bohlin’s and his associates are always praised with the word “elegant” with their designs. Bohlin’s designs turn out to be graceful which appeals to the eyes with the natural indigenous looks. A well respected architecture critic named Ada Lousie Huxtable once stated on Bohlin’s Apple Store design in New York Fifth Avenue, “Who could have imagined that... the General Motors Building that brought mediocrity and a dismal, redundant plaza to the most elegant part of New York’s Fifth Avenue would be redeemed by the Apple Store’s magic crystal cube on a newly elevated plaza, turning disaster into triumph?” Huxtable was amused in how the mediocre building was able to transform into a elegant building that brought pleasure in the 5th avenue…
Sullivan saw Jenney’s work through the eyes of his transcendent nature. He claimed in his essay “The Tall Office Building Artfully Considered,” that the momentous task of designing such building was a practical one, for such proposes, and thus was founded through common reasoning and intuition, not taciturn schooled learning. Louis Sullivan coined the now popular phrase “form follows function “in this essay. He eliminated the notion that arbitrary ornament was necessary to conceal lack of underlining design, and saw the structure as a whole. Skyscrapers were a perfect example of man’s might and American ideals.…
For many years New York has been a destination for many people to visit or to live in. There are many things the city has to offer, but at times people will not fully appreciate it. New York is a place in which people can find many opportunities and have a chance for a fresh start. As a New Yorker, and living here my entire life there are some things that I will often take for granted. However, after reading E.B. White’s essay and understanding his point of view on New York and its residents, it has made me reconsider many things about living here, and to appreciate the wonderful city I live in.…
Art is a connector for all humans, not just artists and their world. Whether the audience realizes it or not, local art is a force that often brings people of different backgrounds, cultures and lifestyles together. Cities as diverse as New York City benefit from the constant stimuli of art. Art takes multiple forms in urban spaces, including graffiti, murals, art museums, and commemorative statues. Within the article Reframing Public Art: Audience Use, Interpretation, and Appreciation, author Harriet F. Senie narrows her research in on the interaction of statues and their audiences.…
Developed in 1964, Robert Blake and Jane Mouton created their own managerial grid that is effectively used as a tool for training managers different leadership styles that can enhance organizational efficiency. According to Covey and Ewell (2015), the managerial grid is one of the iconic theories in the study of management techniques. Blake and Mouton offer a graphic interpretation of leadership style through a managerial grid. This is sometimes referred to as the “one-best-style approach”. The grid identifies leadership styles based on a manager’s concern for people (the vertical axis) and concern for task accomplishment or production (the horizontal axis)”…

Blinding lights. Towering buildings. Eccentric performers. New York City has become a place known for making dreams come true. New York City fills people with joy despite the hustling of the city’s anti-social inhabitants the gut-wrenching smell of hot dogs and smoke, and the boring view of towering concrete buildings.…
The Big Apple New York City is the place that everyone dreams of visiting. From the building, to the city lights, everyone wants to see the city that never sleeps. I remember being six years old and seeing NYC on the news while sitting on my couch in my living room in Poland. All the tall building and city streets did not fail to quickly capture my attention. Before I knew it my parents…
Jane Jacob’s “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” is a non-architect’s perspective on what makes neighborhoods and cities great and her analysis of streets and public spaces instigated me to observe the effects of design and urban planning. The design of the “void”, exterior space is just as significant as the building “figure” space and should function as such in the transition from public to private…
