Creating a memorial can be complicated. When choosing a way to symbolize an important part of history, there are multiple factors that play an important role. A group or agency should consider the cost and properly symbolizing the event or person within the creation of the monument. The cost of a dedication is a necessary aspect.…
Creating monuments to memorialize the history of the United States should be heavily evaluated before action is made. History is remembered and glorified through the creations of monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial as described in Source A. Therefore, the people and events chosen to be memorialized contribute to the perspective we have on the morality of these figures and their actions and our identity as a nation. Evidently, that significance is not always considered when making said decisions. Source B depicts a monument of Christopher Columbus high and proud in a powerful stance.…
Monuments have been up, built, and honored for hundreds of years now. Whether or not if it represented a significant individual during a crucial time period, or just to honor an individual’s successful for trapping lobsters (Source F), monuments have been valued for a long time. However, in recent years, many communities, and groups, have found themselves questioning the existence of a particular statute, due to it’s meaning and what it really represents. Which will lead into a follow up question. What factors should a group or agency, consider and examine, in memorializing an event or person in creating a monument.…
You have to figure out where you want the monument to be, you have to figure out how it has to look and how big it needs to be, and you have to figure out what you have to use to make it and how it will be memorialized. There is three connections to how the monuments should be done, they are in: Source A, Source E, and Source G. To begin, in order to memorialize with a monument, you have to figure out where it is to be located. In Source A, it says "In this way the monumental core in Washington functions somewhat like a pilgrimage site, where…
Monuments shouldn’t be established or no longer established because of a sculpture capturing only a specific time and place of how it happened and also can take too much space; it also causes controversy between citizens in public places; such as malls, parks etc. Individual communities perceive that it could be an agreeable way to preserve history from different types of bourgeois who made a change in antiquity and the world. But constructing large monuments will not get you anywhere. You might think it could recall some of the history of people, but it can only take you so far. Your mind won’t go far away when the person was born or each of their birthdays.…
History of Richmond’s Robert E. Lee Monument Monuments exist for the purpose of recognizing a significant individual or event. They provide a glimpse into the past, reflecting the attitudes of the government and people at a given time. However, as cultural ideas and norms shift towards a more progressive view, relics of the past are called into question. In American history, some of the most disputed examples of this are the myriad of memorials that honor the former Confederacy. One such memorial, a statue of Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, was created in reverence of his qualities as a renowned and honorable leader, as well as a regional hero.…
The whole point of a memorial is to remember something that happened there that affiliated with whatever the monument is representing. The location really does matter. If the location is bad then people are taking away from the moment itself. An example of bad location taking away from the monument is a museum in Washington D. C. "It is not surprising that immediate and intense controversy spotted when plans were publicized to build a Holocaust museum on The Mall in Washington D.C.…
Monuments symbol many things. A historical event, a remembrance for a loved one, or even to mark an important event that changed life as we know it. Monuments can be seen a lot of places like museums and cemeteries. There are many factors to choose from when building a monument. The Confederate flag was a symbol of the south during the civil war, while the north had the U.S flag. Today the Confederate flag is controversial because people believe it represents racism because it was used during the slavery time. While others believe it represents “Southern pride”. The law involved would be the freedom of speech/ 1st amendment.…
The issue over removing Confederate statues has sparked many debates and emotions throughout the U.S. Hate speech stirs emotions, so do these statues. This made me think of the debate over if hate speech is protected by the freedom of speech. Hate speech is a terrible thing. But, it needs to be protected.…

Monuments are a great way to honor a great person or an important event. Monuments are used all over the place and are marking the history of things. One of my favorite monuments is the Veterans Freedom Flag Monument in Lima, Ohio. Many people think that monuments are pointless but I think they are very meaningful.…
The monument I would create is in Boston, Massachusetts, which is a historically rich city, but I would create a monument to one specific event named the Boston Massacre. This is a significant event in the history of United States, where British troops murdered some Americans after they formed a mob. This partly led up to the Revolutionary War where America fought Britain. This monument would be made of dolomitic marble. It would contain a 20 x 20 replication of Paul Revere’s engraving of the Boston Massacre, and under it an inscription explaining the Boston Massacre.…
