Dantes was a romantic hero. To be considered a romantic hero back in the day you had to have a secret, have a grim destiny, be mysterious, melancholy man who felt like he didn't fit in with society(Esler.572).Dantes had a secret when he changed his name to The Count of Monte Cristo, but his name was really Dante as the man they all knew once. At the end Dante realised that everything happens for a reason and that he had a grim destiny. Dante was a common man in the beginning of the movie. He was a sailor, was illiterate, and had a girlfriend whom he was planning on wedding. He was a melancholy man who didn't fit in with society for not being rich and educated. …show more content…
In the romantics era many were drawn to the supernatural (Lipking). In the beginning of the story Dantes said, god has to do with everything and he can see everything, he's always there. When Dantes got locked in the Chateau he was carving into the wall ”God will give me justice”, for four whole years. Later on Dante's tells the priest “God has faded from my heart, revenge has replaced it”. The priest has been digging in the tunnel to try to escape for 11 years, and still believed that god was with him. At the end Dante realised that everything god put him through, all those rough 13 years, god has a reason for it. It was Dante's destiny to become The Count of Monte
