In western culture, people may assume that everyone follows a similar joint-family system. However, there are many different systems with varying complexity, that are used all over the world. A good example of a culture with a different take on kinship are the Cree people. Who have different classifications of cousins based on their lineage. The two types of cousins are: parallel cousins and cross cousins.
Parallel cousins are either the children of ego’s mother’s sister, or ego’s father’s brother. Usually, these cousins grew up in the same village as ego, resulting in a closer sibling-like relationship. This means that incest between ego and a parallel cousin is strictly taboo. Cross cousins, on the other hand, are either the children of ego’s mother’s brother, or ego’s father’s sister. These cousins grew up in a different village as ego, making them basically strangers.
