Studying in America for a couple of years I got to see different cultures and people from different parts of the world that each had their own unique outlook on life. After coming back to Turkey, although I was delighted to find myself in the company of an entirely new group of friends, it was difficult to adjust to the heavy workload the students were given in school. In Turkey, they give importance solely to grades and standardized testing, which prevents students from having a well rounded background and education. Although the education system lacked giving students the chance to participate in social activities , fortunately the discussions we had in some high school classes were engaging, whether they were about politics or other interesting topics. These discussions also opened me up to new opinions and helped shape my thoughts in a variety of areas. When we had debates, I would be assigned a different topic each time. After research on my opinion of the subject, I would have to do the difficult task of thoroughly understanding the opposing perspective, thus strengthening not only my ideas on the subject but my ability to be empathetic to the other
