Symbols can either be inherited or invented.
Inherited: meaning they have been handed down over time.
Huck and Jim find a house on a downstream, so they can find what they can, along with some lumber. They ended up making a raft and a fire. Later on in the story, they find a steamboat that got into a rock. However, Huck finds out that there are men inside.
So, they no longer had to answer anyone, and they could just sit in their raft and go towards freedom.

In Chapter 15, Huck and Jim got separated when Huck gets the canoe to find somewhere to tie up the raft until the fog goes away. Later on, he hears Jim, however, it sounds like Jim is behind him. Huck notices that Jim is on the other side of the island now. Huck pretended that he was on the raft, Jim believes him at first. Jim noticed that there was a lot of debris on the raft, so he ended up scolding Huck.
Later on, they find out that they are not fully free from evil people and other influences of the towns on the river banks. Even earlier on, this shows the paradise of many things like the raft, river floods. This brings Huck and Jim into contact with evils and even stolen items. Later on, the fog made them miss the Ohio River, which was going to be their route to freedom.
The river continues to be something more than just a place. Huck and Jim continue to move south, the duke and the dauphin went to the raft. Huck and Jim have to spend more time ashore. However, the river represents to get refugees away from trouble. It usually happens when something bad happens. Yet each escape occurs in the bigger context of a drift toward the south. In this case, the river shows how complicated the South really is. Huck and Jim's journey seemed like a paradise and a start to freedom.
