Early adulthood is often called emerging adulthood for often young adults have not taken on full adult responsibilities yet and are still engaging in extended exploration in areas such as education, work, and personal values. According to Erickson, young adults must resolve the conflict of intimacy versus isolation. In this stage the positive outcome is that young adults form a close relationship with a partner, and the negative outcome is loneliness and self-absorption. Another theory on young adult development is by Levinson. Levinson theorized that “young adults usually construct a dream, typically involving a career for men and both marriage and a career for women, and form a relationship with a mentor”. As a young adult currently, I would agree with Levinson that I do have a constructed dream, with the main focus of it being my career. I differ slightly with Levinson’s theory in the fact that I am not focused, or worried about marriage at this time, but just as Berk stated in our textbook, the accuracy of Levinson’s theory has changed as things such as the age of marriage, etc. have changed from generation to generation. I still feel that Levinson’s theory is very accurate and applicable to my current developmental stage though, so I chose to include it. By taking this class, I have learned of many theorists and theories that can be applied to my personal journey from the prenatal stage to early adulthood. From Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, to Erickson’s stages of psychosocial development, and Kohlberg’s stages of moral development, many of these theories I was able to apply to the stages of my own personal development and memories from those developmental
