I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is an autobiography writing by Maya Angelou. In this book she is narrating her life from when she was around 3 years old to when she is 17. Throughout the whole book Marg was trying to understand everything that was going on around her. Marg’s view on life is forced to change because of the challenges that she faces.
In the beginning of the story we were introduced to a naïve yet also aware Marg. She was naïve to certain things around her, but she was also really aware of others. At the very beginning of the book we are shown a Marg that is not happy with herself we see a Marg that wishes she was white. Before they received the presents Marg and Bailey had already convinced themselves that their parents were dead. When Marg received her present it was like if someone broke her heart because now all she could think was why they had sent her and her brother away in the first place. At this point Marg was confused and asking herself questions that she couldn’t get answers to. A least not then. Sometime passes and her dad shows up in Stamps, Arkansas which is where she lives with her grandmother. When he shows up she say “And my seven-year-old world humpty-dumptied, never to be put back together again” (Angelou p.55). At this point Marg thinks that the return of her father was the start of everything that went wrong from there. Chapter 12 was were one of the most important thing in the book happened. Marg is sexually abused my Mr. Freeman at the time her mother’s boyfriend. “The act of rape on an eight-year-old body is a matter of the needle giving because the camel can’t. The child gives, because the body can, and the mind of the violator cannot.” (Angelou p.78). After this Marg wasn’t sure of anything she could understand why Mr. Freeman would do that. For a while after that Marg did not speak at all, but to her brother Bailey which is understandable. Though after a while she was seen as impudent and her muteness sullenness. Some off her relatives felt offended by her and thought she was being uptight. After some time she and Bailey found themselves on their way back to Stamps. She mentions that she never found out if Momma sent for them or if the St. Louis family just decided to send them back. When back in Stamps she met a woman named Mrs. Bertha Flowers. Mrs. Flowers helped Marg start talking again and helped with her education. Marg always thought very highly of her and was very grateful for her. At the begging of chapter 26 Marg leaves Stamps for good and travels to California where her father and her mother live.
