Although there is no way to be positive why people choose to join the extremist group, we are able to make assumptions to why. Religion is said to be a very large factor. Because ISIS plays off of the Sunni-Shia divide, they present themselves to be the “true” Islam religion. Some people, including famous celebrities and political figures like Donald Trump, associate all people who are of Islamic culture or people who are Muslim with ISIS when in fact, that is false. ISIS has made a bad name for those who are caring, and kind Muslims. Another way that ISIS seems to be recruiting people is through social media. Obama has rejected to put troops on the ground to “temporarily” clear them out. He also believes that it is the local population’s duty, as well as allies, to help stop ISIS from growing and becoming even more aggressive towards America and other countries around the world (Shear 2015). Because he does not want to out troops on the ground, he’s getting a lot of criticism. Senator Roy Blunt, a Republican from Missouri said, “Unfortunately, the president’s press conference today confirmed that he is unwilling to acknowledge his failed policies or re-evaluate his strategy moving forward” (Shear 2015). Many are also critiquing the president after he said “we have contained them” just a day before the attacks in Paris which killed at least 129 people (Shear 2015). Although people interpret that as “we have ISIS controlled,” the president was more so speaking about ISIS’s territory rather than the group’s violence. For now, America will be holding back troops and continuing to do what the leaders see
