This short story is about a family who doesn’t seem to get along very well. They bicker about everything and some of the characters are very nonchalant. O’Connor does not seem to want her readers to like these characters at all. At the beginning of this story the family talks about going on a trip to Florida. The grandmother also sneaks her cat in the car when they leave to Florida. The grandmother displays her selfish side when she only thinks about herself and wanting to be recognized as a lady if they were to ever get into an accident and cross paths with the Misfit. Hoping that the Misfit would spare her life for the mere fact of her being a lady, instead of thinking about her family and most importantly her only son.
The family makes a pit stop at a restaurant and meets the owner named Red Sammy. The owner complains about all of the deceitful people around to the grandmother. He says that “A good man is hard to find” even though he let two men buy gasoline on credit. The grandmother says to Sammy that he is a good man for doing so. You can see here how naive the grandmother and Sammy both are. Thinking that all people are good trustful people.
