Important Traditions
Filipino American traditions. Many Filipino American traditions center on family and Catholicism such as Misa de Gallo (series of nine Christmas mass) and Noche Buena (grand family Christmas Eve dinner after midnight mass). Other traditions and cultural themes include weddings in white, caution about supernatural beings and spells, as well as language and rituals demonstrating respect for elders such as addressing an elderly person in the third person and kissing the hands (Claudio-Perez, 1998). Lastly, is the tradition of hospitality and the notion that the best food and the best everything should be offered to one’s guest, even if it will deprive or hurt the owner of the house is another highly valued custom in the Filipino American culture (Claudio-Perez, 1998).

Teaching students to take pride in their home culture while learning to operate in the American culture can be done use culturally responsive teaching methods. Methods such as being a warm demander; holding students to high expectations in a nurturing way, valuing and building on skills which students bring from their home culture such as value, pride, respect for family including elders, and using strategies such as having students work in pairs or small groups to build confidence in skills within a relaxed classroom
