Pregnancy could be a shocking thing, especially if unintended and at a young age. Throughout history, many parents have been shocked from their daughters being pregnant at a very young age. Teen pregnancy is a life-changing situation and has ruptured many teens’ lives. Today’s youth love to be in a relationship and feel that the best way to express their feelings toward one another is through intimacy. Most of them realized the unwanted effects of a sexual intercourse and, therefore, they rely on contraceptives to prevent an unplanned teen pregnancy. STDs are alarming because they can easily spread and its usually impossible to tell if one acquires STDs by just looking at him or her. Many teens think that they are a lower risk of getting a STD through an oral or anal contact, however, about 2 in 4 sexually active teens acquire STDs in United States(“Teen Pregnancy Statistics”). In addition, studies show sexually transmitted diseases are spreading at an alarming rate among young people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly half of the nation 's new cases of STDs each year occur among adolescents and young adults(Caplan). All STDs spread through both a sexual contact which includes sexual intercourse and an anal or oral contact. Common STDs that most teengers acquire include, chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, and sometimes HIV (Caplan). One of the most common STDs most teens get in contact with is herpes (“STDs and Teens”). Herpes can be transmitted through a sexual intercourse and through touch to other parts of the body. Therefore, contraceptives such as condoms are not 100% effective in preventing the spread of herpes or any other kind of STDs (“Teen Pregnancy and Parenting”). The best way teenagers can be completely protected against STDs is by remaining sexually abstinent and avoiding any bodily contact. Practicing abstinence can prevent two things at once - unplanned teen pregnancy and the spread of STDs. Therefore every teen should be sexually abstinent and be alert about spreading
