The first college to adopt an honor code was The College of William and Mary in 1760. But rather then be implemented by faulty or teachers, it was the students themselves who created this ‘code’. “A set of rules that advanced the appearance of duty, pride, power, and self- esteem; and conformity to these rules was required if an individual was to be considered and honorable member of society” (Gallant, 2008) as described in Tricia Gallant’s article Revisiting the Past: The Historical Context of Academic Integrity. This code evolved as universities did, with a diverse student body flooding college campuses; men and women of all races and classes. The International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI), a group of 200 schools, states “Higher education and society benefit when colleges and universities have standards of integrity that provide the foundation for a vibrant academic life, promote scientific progress, and prepare students for responsible citizenship.” (Keohane, 1999) While many students view this ‘improvement’ in the most literal sense, preparing themselves to enter the workforce, college is much more then that. There are endless possibilities on a college campus. Many college professors and students participate in research to advance their field of study, campuses offer various activities for students to participate in during their leisure time and many student’s are already working at part time jobs to gain experience. College is seen as a time to ‘find yourself’, to figure out what you want to do with your life and who you are as a person. Jamestown University describes the importance of academic integrity with the following; “The college is an academic community whose mission is to promote learning through the acquisition, preservation, and transmission of knowledge. In order to achieve this goal, the college must create and maintain an atmosphere that promotes honesty and the free exchange of ideas, which is the essence of academic integrity.” (Jamestown, 2016) While everyone’s path in life is different the idea of
