Communication is a vital aspect in nursing practice that influences patient outcomes. Communication is dependent upon the patient-clinician relationship that allows for open communication to consider all aspects to provide the best care (Paget et al., 2011). Nurses utilize different techniques and methods to achieve effective communication. The purpose of this paper is to discuss principles and methods of communication and how they apply to nursing practice. Also discussing the implications of ethical principles on communication and how team communication can impact patient safety.

Three methods of interdisciplinary communication are Situational Briefing Guide: SBAR, Team Huddle and Multidisciplinary Rounds using Daily Goal Sheet (The SBAR an acronym for a technique that focuses on information involving the patient’s situation, background, assessment and any recommendations (Dingley, C., Daughtery, K., Derig, M.K., & Persing, R, 2008). Team huddle is a meeting held to discuss any concerns or issues regarding patients (Dingley et al., 2008). The final method of Multidisciplinary Rounds is collaboration of the health care team to establish goals, make decisions and discuss any issues that concern the patient (Dingley et al., 2008). One of the methods of communication that I apply to my practice is team huddles. At the beginning and end of shift the charge nurse holds a huddle and shares significant information regarding patients. For example, we discuss any safety issues, we provide information such as if any patients have indwelling catheters and central lines. We also talk about if there are any patients going for procedures or surgery. I believe having huddles helps me to prepare for the shift and anticipate any issues that may arise and increases …show more content…
In addition, there are different methods used to enhance health team member communication and teamwork. Lastly, ethics can play a role in communication and team communication can influence patient safety. As a nurse I have to communicate daily with other nurses and health care members to ensure patient safety and give quality care. I will continue to use the methods of communication and apply the principles of communication and ethics to my practice.
