I am a first generation Asian-American in the U.S., and I have been facing a different kind of challenges in terms of assimilation within the society. In the Western society, the way of communication is very different than South Asian countries. In the eastern culture, people still have a traditional way of communication, which refers to so much respect for older people, women, and strangers. But, in the U.S., we really do not care about those kind of practices. In my own background, I do not call name for someone older than me; however, people prefer to call by name in the United States. I think, these kind of cultural paradoxes can cause cultural conflict among the parties. My kids are more socialized in the western culture, and they like to act as an American than Nepalese, which could cause conflict between my generation and next generation.
