The Importance of Family Communication Everyone is a member of a family. Whether it be the biological family that a person was born into, an adopted family that a person is ingrained into, or the close friends one claims as their “family”, we are all familiar with the idea and institution of the family. Yet, what is it that really makes a family click? How does family influence and guide our lives? Communication is the underlying factor that keeps a family running smoothly. As is the case for many situations, when there isn’t consistent communication present, things can begin to break down.
I come from a large family; I am the third oldest child of six. When all of my siblings are together, verbal communication can be difficult to say the least. We tend be very vocal and outspoken in informal situations. However, we remain a close-knit family through both verbal and nonverbal communication. In one scene, a family eats dinner together, yet uses little verbal communication at all due to the conflict that is brewing in that household. The communication that is used at the table is very snide and sarcastic. As the scene progresses, the dinner becomes very tense and boils into anger and near violence, ending in the father throwing a dinner plate against the wall. Another family in the movies uses masked messages to express contempt. The son of the family (an only child) never expresses his emotion to his father or mother.
