Competency implies that as a nurse, I will be able to provide relevant and high quality care to the patients. One important component of relevant and high quality care is effective communication (Burnard & Gill, 2014). I need to consider what my colleagues and patients are asking and be able to respond using the written word and by verbal answers. Sometimes lending a hand, and listening well are the best ways to verify that the communication is being effective. Evidence-based research is a critical component of the decision-making process when it comes to patient care. Patient values include the views and opinions of patients regarding care, while clinical expertise includes the accumulation of clinical skills from education and practice (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011).
