Topic: Is it always essential to tell the truth, or are there circumstances or situations in which it is better to lie?
For several decades, there has been discussion about whether telling the truth in all circumstances is necessary or not. Some people who are in favor of telling the truth in all circumstances would always consider the bad result of telling lies. However, others who agree with telling lies in various situations consider case by case situations where all circumstances would need to be considered. White lies considering the feeling of the other person can help avoid collisions in relationships. The place where white lies are the most important is the workplace. According to a survey, 95% of office workers lied to preserve relationships in the workplace and they responded that the situations which need the most lies are in salary negotiation, performance evaluation or pretext for lateness (Lim, 2013). For example about promotion or negotiation for salary, workers lie to take a more advantageous position in the negotiation. They often embellish their experience and achievements to make them look better. Although they don’t have full ability for the work, these lies can help develop trust as well as gain a higher salary or new position. In another example, when a team senior suggests new ideas or projects, most team members will agree with them, as the team leader is their superior. So despite an opposite opinion, employees often agree with their senior to ensure better future relationships. This lying can help avoid conflicts with seniors or colleagues. Firstly, in medical situations, there is the Placebo Effect where a doctor’s lies without harmful intentions are known to cause actual improvements in patients. Secondly, according to the Pygmalion Effect, lying through overestimations and expectations makes people have pride and belief in their ability so that they achieve their goals and sometimes exceed, despite their limited ability. In the area where lying is needed to improve relationship, white lies are used to avoid conflicts and build happy relationships with others. White lies aren’t always needed but indeed there are some cases where it is necessary. To conclude, this paper has suggested several examples that support lying.
