Positive reinforcers are favorable outcomes after the desired behavior while negative reinforcers are undesired outcome after the desired behavior. As the book stated, repeat behaviors that lead to rewards and behaviors that fail to produce rewards will
lead to punishment. For example, parents rewarding if the child has good grades at school and excellent performance with candy or toys or some other prizes.
The behaviorist theory focus in dealing with problem behavior. I can apply the theory to my clients or students where I need to focus on changing the reinforcement that maintains that behavior. First thing I have to know is to understand my client’s environmental context. The environmental context consists of families that exist within communities and neighborhoods, political and economic views, beliefs and actions of the individual. In this way, I get a little background or information within his or her environment. It is also important to know the strengths of my client as well. At this process, behavior of the students should be shaped through positive or negative reinforcement. This will tend to increase and repeat the desired behavior. Punishment, positive or negative decreases the possibility of an event or undesirable behavior happening again. For my future practice, I would give the client immediate feedback in order for him or her to learn from it. I would repeat the directions and break down the task into small steps so that he or she can be able to process it in his or her mind. It is important that I give the client positive reinforcement. Furthermore, I believe that behaviorist theory would be effective to my teaching because I can encourage the students to do at their own best. It is also the way to improve their performance and behavior. I will try to avoid punishment as much as possible, unless it is necessary. I believe that punishment is not that bad at all because from my experience, the punishment helps me to learn from my mistakes and also it disciplines me as well. Most importantly, it is good to have clear expectations between me and my client in order to meet the certain goals for desired behavior. Communication and motivation are also essential in this process in order for me and the client be successful in this
