After carefully analyzing the book, I found examples of bias, discrimination, and prejudice. Let’s start with the title of the book, Goodnight Spaceman. As one can see, the author, Michelle Robinson, uses the term “spaceman” instead of astronaut. Not only does she use the term “spaceman” in the title, but it is also used throughout the book. Spaceman is not a form of inclusive language. In Understanding Human Differences, inclusive language can be defined as words that are not gender specific, or those that include both genders (Koppelman, 2017). Instead, it infers that all astronauts are men. Most books published recently tend to use inclusive language, therefore I was surprised that Goodnight Spaceman, which was published in 2016, used bias language. Also pertaining to gender, both children in Goodnight Spaceman are boys. Yes, the book is pertaining to a particular family, but this is still a form of sexism in Goodnight Spaceman. In my classroom, I will incorporate a form of multicultural teaching. Not only do I owe it to my students to be a multicultural teacher, but I also owe it to society. As said before, America is continually becoming more diverse, and it is our job as educators to acknowledge and incorporate multiple cultures in education. In order to become a great multicultural teacher, it is important to become a multicultural person. In order to become a more multicultural individual, I will spend time learning about different cultures, and understanding a pluralistic
