II. The disparity in income between the wealthy and the poor is staggering.
“In the United States, 21 percent of all children are in poverty, a poverty rate higher than what prevails in virtually all other rich nations,” Inequality Stanford reports.
Comparing that to the statistic of “In the United States, the 3 wealthiest people own as much as the bottom 50%” from bigthink.com, it is clear how the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing. Is it fair that some are earning billions of dollars and workers of the same company are barely making ends meet? Absolutely not, that is why things need to change.
In the film Inequality for All, Robert Reich states “in the U.S., 42% of children who are born into poverty will not get out. In Denmark, the figure is 25%. In Great Britain, 30%.”
In comparison to other nations the US is significantly more unequal. Each individual should have an equal opportunity to reach economic prosperity and with 42% of children being stuck in poverty, that is not the case.
