The definition of Independent films comes from its rebellious relationship with the origins of american cinema itself. Indies are defined as being made outside of the studio system but the connotations of what that actually means are usually blurred. Today i will convince my audience to watch more independent films instead of commercial films. My three main points are that Indies are more personal, creative and unique. Modern day cinema is under a system where six major conglomerates are in charge of showcasing todays popular culture. Each major studio is in the movie making business with hundred million dollar productions. They are more interested in making huge profits from content that sells and less concerned with staying true to the heart of a film. This is why indie films are important. They are the mom and pop shops of the film industry. Often you have passionate directors from diverse backgrounds who are empowered to make undiluted, unaltered versions of their vision. Having a huge budget does not guarantee a great movie. The sometimes sad budget constraints are not seen as an obstacle but as an opportunity to be innovative. The filmmaking process has many parts so there are lots of opportunities along the way to look for creative alternatives. The rise of the iconic found footage film sub genres have its origins in the blair witch project because of lack of stabilizing equipment. They can add comedic relief like in the case of monty python they could not afford real horses so they used folley actors to mimic the sound of galloping with coconuts. These workarounds make audiences appreciate how they think outside the box rather than relying on cgi too
