Dale Chihuly’s installations do not only appear in Museum’s. Two Chandeliers were set up at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. Dr. Jonas Salk, the founder of the Institute, commissioned Chihuly, because he believed that art and science coincide. These chandeliers were specifically designed to hang between the towers, bordering the courtyard. Each chandelier contained a different color-scheme, but both were vivid colors that could serve as an inspiration to the scientists who worked hard each day.…

Beadwork: A Native American Trade Native American beadwork is one of the most well known trades in its culture. Beadwork in the Native American culture dates back to prior to the Europeans coming to America. They focused on weaving and beadwork as mostly for the purpose of clothing. Indians would dress in buckskin and fur that were then decorated with large beads. Shirts, moccasins, dresses, leggings for special occasions, breechclout and headdresses were all of the clothing items they would wear and decorate with beads.…
Velcro: The Glue That Holds Our World Together In “Generation Velcro”, Dorothy Woodend discusses the issue of society’s lack of knowledge, caused by things like Velcro, video games, and a general “lack of suffering” (Woodend 207) experienced by generations past. She compares the lifestyle of farmers to that of the modern generation, who she criticizes for not having the same work ethic, self-sufficiency, and practical skills. The essay presents a flawed opinion on the abilities and upbringings of today’s youth, based on the author’s disdain for modern technology and her extremely narrow definition of “practical knowledge” (206).…
A metaphor to thoroughly interpret my own cultural identity would be the coconut delicacy known as Haupia. Not only for its elegant perplexion, but for the soft clouded stature that belongs to this alien creature, which taste is only permitted to the fortunate few occupying the native islands of Hawaii. Another perplex root in the tree of my culture is Lei-making. The breathtaking row of an aligned set of flowers to form the Lei is one of the prime connections to the base of the hawaiian culture by contributing to the ancient craft itself. A more well-known phenomenon that had one of its origins among the islands of Hawaii and is still dwelled upon to this day is surfing.…
A large fish stands on two legs, the vibrant colors luring onlookers in, while standing as a massive structure. Alexander Calder’s stabiles have become extremely famous for their simplicity and hidden beauty. Calder’s work inspired a new movement of hanging wire sculptures and gargantuan firmly planted structures, each seemingly abstract, but with a true inspiration. Alexander Calder was born into a family of artists, with his mother, father and grandfather famous artists. When he was growing up, he created jewelry out of wire for his sister.…
In 1983, the Cold War was in a heightened stated. Early in the year, Ronald Reagan gave his famous Evil Empire speech as justification for deploying NATO nuclear-armed missiles. The SDI or “Star Wars” plan was a sign of heightening tensions between the NATO countries and the Warsaw Pact ones. Other events, like the Soviet downing of Korean Airlines 007, Massive Nuclear Protests in Europe and the Able Archer exercises, were further signs of rising Cold War tensions. It was in this atmosphere that the British Broadcasting Agency commissioned the film Threads.…
A senior thesis is meant to shown the learned knowledge and skills acquired during a college education. At Kettering University this is usually done in the form of paper detailing a student's attempt to solve a real world problem at their Co-Op employer. A skill every professional should have is the ability to make things clear, whether in an discussion, an email, or a thesis. This is done through a understanding of rhetoric and its many parts. In Ryan Guidroz’s CUE project, RAFT- Adaptive Welding Technologies, completed at General Motors' Lansing Grand River Assembly plant, he employs academic knowledge, professional experience, and basic problem solving skills to address an issue with GM’s spot welding process.…

A beautiful tragedy… in April of 1912 The Titanic sunk in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Nobody knew it was going to be some of their last nights with their loved ones, or the last night they would enjoy the company of an acquaintance they may have come across on their trip on the fateful Titanic. “Not Even God himself Could Sink this Ship” says an Employee of the White Star Line. Passengers and crew members, music, and art work all went down and were forever lost that sad, unfortunate night The Titanic sank.…
