The Internet has proven to be one of the greatest advancements of the twentieth century. So much so that many could not bear the possibility of not having access to it at all times. The Internet has gone through three basic forms during it’s growth, it started as an idea, became a reality as ARPANET, and expanded to the world as the Internet that is known today.
Johnny Ryan points out in his book A History of the Internet and the Digital Future that the Internet is the result of a desire for quick, international communication during the cold war. The Internet is not as useful for primary school students as it is for secondary and higher education students because children do not have the same level of maturity as adults. Paul says that when he was young he “understood as a child” and “thought as a child” but as he grew he “put away childish things.” Children have a different mindset than adults. They have not had the time and training required to have control of their minds. Because of the lack of control, the Internet should not be introduced as a distraction in primary education. Not only can the Internet be a distraction, but gives the ability to access sensitive, and sometimes inappropriate, information. Therefore, primary schools should avoid the Internet all together. The Bible teaches that parents should teach their own children. This means that the amount of sensitive information that children have access to should be controlled by their parents. While schools have tried to implement the Internet into primary education with blocks and guards against sensitive information, the filters have greatly failed because students are easily able to bypass the filters. Their bypass of the filters opens the Internet, not only for distractions, but for sensitive information that would normally be monitored by their parents.
