I feel that I did not attempt any summaries or complex reflections and this should be incorporated when talking to future clients as I can gain clarity by summarising what they are trying to convey. I also used a lot of open-ended questions, which could be good as it allows for a deeper conversation that will lead to more chance of empathy and understanding during the intimate conversation. However, I feel that I should implement more of a mixture between closed-ended questions and open-ended questions as closed-ended questions are more direct and could provide more clarity of specific issues.
Finally I feel that to also not only use open-ended questions, I needed to implement more statements to gauge an understanding of the importance of change. Utilising statements can be very useful as if the client dose not respond immediately by arguing for change, I can then progress to exploring that particular concept more. Throughout the session I made no successful statements and I feel that it may have taken away the feeling of importance of change for the client, and hopefully I can implement more statements in the future to further my motivational interviewing
