Carefully looking within all of Chapter 1, can you tell us where the cat is?
According to the British Society of Interventional Radiology (n.d.), Interventional Radiology is a novel field of medicine that combines the expertise of a radiologist together with the knowledge of therapeutic intervention using advanced techniques using a range of imaging guidance modalities such as X-ray fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to accurately treat a medical condition. By the same token, Baum and Baum (2014, p. S76) implies that using the same diagnostic imaging tools that transformed medicine also assist the physician by applying …show more content…
Best (2011, p. 3) asserted that this method is superior to endoscopic tube placement since shining a light on a distended stomach is readily achievable with PFG. Furthermore, the researcher, implied that PFG is a safe technique for patients who are a candidate for long-term enteral feeding. After completion of this intervention, the patient is returned to his room. Physical therapy is on hold for that day pending medical clearance.
Physical therapy implications: For PFG placement includes careful inspection of the placement site to ensure that the integrity of the tube is secure before mobilization, second, if it is possible to ask nursing to disconnect the tubing prior to out of bed mobilization to prevent accidental tugging or if the feeding tube is short, and finally, nursing has to be informed if any incidence occurs during mobilization such as spontaneous dislodge of the tube or the feeding machine emits an alarm due to crimping of the …show more content…
Nursing can also reinforce the stability of the catheter by applying tape on the catheter tube to prevent accidental twisting.
OPINION:
Interventional radiology is a great addition in the field of radiologic medicine. It benefits the patient remarkably by avoiding visit in the operating room, reducing the need for administration of anesthesia that can result in serious adverse effects, and most importantly recovery time is accelerated since it is for the most part a minimally invasive procedure. In a financial perspective, it is cost effective, reduces hospital stay dramatically that may ultimately stop iatrogenic complications and improves the hospital financial state.
Conclusion:
As can be seen above, interventional radiology is a welcome addition to medicine. An intervention that once performed in the operating room can now be completed safely in an IR suite, utilizing advanced imaging technologies for guidance with the intention of faster recovery, less invasive and shorter time in the
