One week into the move, trouble began for the Johnson’s family. They were the only African-American family in the neighborhood.
Mrs. Johnson yelled, “Dinner’s ready!” Tyrone and Travis quickly rushed from the room they shared to the dark brown wooden table to eat. On the table was mashed potatoes, ham, and macaroni & cheese. Mr. Johnson just getting to the table and said, “Dinner looks delicious, let 's eat.”

The bell rang, and the teacher opened the door. “Greetings everyone, my name is Miss Smith. I will be your sophomore teacher this school year.”
A few minutes later the teacher had everyone do quick introductions of themselves. Then it was Tyrone’s turn he said in a low, cracked voice, “Hi my name is Tyrone. I’m 17 years old. I recently moved to Alabama this summer. I really enjoy playing basketball.” Tyrone then sat down. The teacher then suggested, “You should try out for the basketball team!” As Tyrone was doing a class assignment, he got a tap on his left shoulder. A note was addressed to him with a confederate flag placed on the front. When he opened it, in bold black print it said, “WE HATE NIGGERS! YOU DON’T BELONG HERE!” Tyrone’s Jaw dropped. His heart skipped, sweat dripped down his head, his hands became sweaty.
As class was about to end Tyrone felt the tense look of his classmate Chuck. Chuck was a redhead who loved to wear denim. He wore a denim jacket with a white undershirt and blue Levi jeans.
