Formative assessments are used to shape instruction and determine a students level in a given subject area whereas, summative assessments are administered at the end of a lesson or course to identify the students overall mastery of the lesson. Formative assessments provide ongoing feedback to improve the learning of the student. They involve the student in the learning process and the teacher can provide corrective instruction that will best meet the needs of the student. Formative assessments not only give feedback for students and inform them on their areas of strength and the areas that they need more practice on. It also helps teachers modify their instructional methods and techniques. Formative assessment is an ongoing process that gives checkpoints for both the teacher and student to think about and reflect on how they are approaching the lesson. These assessments can be given to both individual students and an entire class if needed. Running records, for example, would be an assessment that the entire class could complete at the beginning, middle, and at the end of the year to determine their reading level, determine their strengths and needs, and identify to the teacher what lessons need to be retaught or taught to the class, so that they can better understand the story and complete the running record successfully. Instruction and assessment connect with one another to help form the learning process inside of a classroom. Assessments help teachers to identify the students’ needs and to instruct lesson plans that will better meet the needs of the students so that they can grasp and understand the concept. Assessments also help students identify what they need to improve on and what areas they do really well in.
