The threshold is Emma’s house Hatfield. Mr. Knightley is the mentor in the book trying to help Emma pointing out what she’s doing is wrong. Mr. Elton is the trickster he tries to gain Emma’s affection by pretending to like Harriet. He causes strife between the friends. Snow and winter represent the conflict and trouble that Emma has caused. The garden in the spring represents the youthful times where romance and happiness are in abundance.
Conflicts/Issues Highlighted: Social and class conflicts were prevalent in the novel. The notion that marriage is essential and the main important thing in a women’s life is highlighted. The distinction between classes with the gypsies. The novel depicts the complexity of human nature and how people often misinterpret situations. Man v. society, man v. man and man v.self.
