It is certain that the flamenco originated in the province of Andalusia in Spain. Flamenco is an art that involves singing, playing the guitar and dancing. Flamenco dancing was originally not set to music as it was only singing and clapping of hands, which is called “toque de palmas”. During the years of slavery in the US, the Slave Act of 1740 prohibited slaves from playing African drums or performing African dances. With stamping and rapid footwork, the clapping and patting of hands against the body, the improvisational movements were the ways they expressed themselves. This style was later on part of the Vernacular dance style. In 1920s, American whites noticed that they took a liking into the music and dances the slaves had created.
Until the mid 1950s, the term "jazz dance" often referred to tap dance, because tap dancing which was set to jazz music was the main performance dance of the era. During the later jazz age, popular forms of jazz dance were the Cakewalk, Black Bottom, Charleston, Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie, Swing dancing and the Lindy Hop. After the 1950s there was a growth in other forms of entertainment music and jazz evolved on Broadway and into a new style that is known as modern jazz. This was exemplified on Broadway shows such as Chicago and
