Leaders often alienate not only themselves but also their followers too. The “Catcher in the Rye” shows the theme of alienation very well. Protagonist Holden alienates himself from society because he fears judgment. Jones also alienated himself from society when he moved his community to Guyana. Unlike Holden, Jones not only alienates himself he alienated his entire community and all of his followers. Jones moved his community to the middle of nowhere. In the article, it said, “Third thing he would do is drown out the voice of outsiders. His purpose was to alienate the followers from outsiders, family and the media” (Brown). Jones purposely choose a remote location for his community so not outside source influenced his followers. This way Jones had complete control over them. The location of the community was in South America.
