Question 1. Do you think only certain individuals are attracted to these types of jobs, or is it the characteristics of the jobs themselves that are satisfying?
The jobs mentioned in the case study are unique to a specific type of employee. Most employees seek careers that provide them with high levels of job satisfaction, salaries or commissions that satisfy basic financial, social, emotional and moral needs. Many have been socialized to believe that commitment, loyalty and dedication or “hard work, blood, sweat and tears” are the engines to success. Notably, the individuals start their work-day early, travel frequently going beyond normal business hours and they lose much sleep. Nonstop job involvement may identify psychologically with their respective jobs. However, other individuals may believe in striking a balance between work, family and socializing and would not be interested in such employment. Some individuals mentioned in this case incident, display a level of competence and perceived autonomy, complimented with a passion and strong connection to the organisation. Initially, one may conclude that she is dissatisfied with her job when considering the first part of her statement, but on examination of the pronouncement “I've done this for 10 years, and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of days in my career when I didn't want to come to work", shows the affective component of her attitude. Finally, Irene proclaims "Every day I wake up and I can't wait to get here" which is the behavioural component of her attitude.
The observations made shows that these individuals are dedicated and actively participate in the jobs. Furthermore, it is recognized that employees in these occupations are very committed as evidenced by the number of hours spent responding to customers whether by emails, face to face conversations or reviewing work processes. Although there is high turnover in these jobs, employees with the requisite skills and interests are able to become very successful. Hiring or recruiting individuals to fill these positions may be difficult. However, candidates with the right attitudes and aptitudes, academic background, technological savvy, freedom to travel extensively and who are prepared to work long rigorous hours will redound to the success of the organization, while giving satisfaction to both the employer and
