JROTC was created by Captain Alden Partridge, a former Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, in Norwich, Vermont in 1819. Captain Partridge believed that his students weren’t prepared to defend their country’s rights, so their education wasn’t complete. With that being said, Captain Partridge added extensive drill practice and physical training along with their usual studies that included learning Latin, Greek, Hebrew, French, English, ten types of mathematics, five types of law, and military history dating back to biblical times. Captain Partridge’s Academy, now known as Norwich Academy, was so successful that the idea of combining military studies with regular studies spread to other schools in the United States. JROTC’s mission is to motivate young people to be better citizens. The purpose of JROTC is to prepare high school students for responsible leadership roles with classroom and outside activities. The activities used includes service learning projects, become opportunities to acquire the knowledge, discipline, and sense of responsibility that are necessary to take charge of one’s future.
